Garlanded with flowers, Tanganyika’s Chief Minister, Julius Nyerere, 39, is carried shoulder-high by supporters after the closing session of the successful Constitutional Conference 29 March 1961 in Dar Es Salaam. Nyerere, the first Tanzanian President (1962-85), reorganized the Tanzanian nationalists into the Tanganyika African National Union (1954) and in 1960 he became chief minister. Nyerere was premier when Tanganyika was granted internal self-government (1961), and president of independence 08 December 1962. He led his country on a path of socialism and self-reliance, but his policies failed, and he retired in 1985. (Photo credit should read -/AFP/Getty Images)
